I took a break from my slow laboring through Milton Terry's Biblical Hermeneutics to read/skim through M.G. Kain's Five Acres and Independence again. This has good to be one of the best books that I own. It is very informative and helpful, and should be a must have for any first time homesteader or farmer. There is information ranging from how to choose the right land, to how to lay out a drain field, to how to keep bees. This book and Gene Logsdon's Practical Skills are probably two of the most fasdinating books to me. I love learning about things that are simple, but forgotten. I also love all the old graphics and diagrams.

I also pulled out Gene Logsdon's At Nature's Pace last night and started working through that again. I guess I'm on a farming kick right now, I must have gotten burned out with all the theological study.

Looks like you have a junk ad there...

Anyway, if you don't know about it, another must-have book is the Encyclopedia to Country Living by Carla Emery (ISBN: 157061377X).

I'm reading the reviews on the book you mentioned above. Seems people feel it's a bit outdated.. is it more philosophical or practical?

Jay,
Carla Emery's book is either on my book shelf or on my wish list, either way I haven't read it yet. I remember almost buying it from Rick Saenz at a conference, but it was a bit pricey at the time. I have heard from many people that it is a must have.

If you are referring to Five Acres and Independence, it is all practical and no philosophy. It is from the 30's I think, so in that respect it probably is outdated. But for those who are looking to set up a more traditional homestead/family farm, it is a wealth of information.

Logsdon's book on the other hand is not all that practical, and I guess could be called philosophical in nature. It is a great read though.

Blessings. Christo

whoops, I should've read the post first, didn't know I had two Logsdon books mentioned. Obviously Logsdon's Practical Skills book is practical, so I assume you weren't asking about that one. You couldn't really say that one is outdated either, since it is all about old-time skills. As I said in my post, that is one of my favorite books.

I was referring to the 5 acres book. I think I saw the title, and then went to read reviews on Amazon and forgot to read the rest of the post!

Cool, what an interesting blog. I also enjoy an interest in the combination of homesteading and theology. Go figure. I have read Logsdon's "Practical Skills" and "Organic Orcharding" and "Good Spirits"; all great books. I enjoyed "5 Acres", too. I can't wait to explore your blog.
