Regarding Stories of Ships

Has anyone read any Patrick O'Brian novels? He seems to be the master of the naval story so I thought I might try a couple of his books. Any suggestions on where to start?

My son recently read The Far Side of the World, which was the first one he's tried. He enjoyed it and has started another one. I think though that Master and Commander is the proper place to start if you want to read them in chronological order. I don't know enough about the series to know if that's important or not.
