I think Thursday and Thrice are good examples of using the mainstream to its full advantage. Those are two bands who put out amazing albums, without compromising themselves. They've gotten great support, and in my mind are still true to "the Underground" or whatever you want to call it. Bands catch a lot of flack for signing to major labels, and for good reason (Juliana Theory), but Thursday especially has done well. Just my 2 cents.
